John Petrucci: Dream Theater drummer announced!!

Mike Mangini, the 48-year-old session artist who has played for ANNIHILATOR, EXTREME, JAMES LABRIE and STEVE VAI, has officially joined DREAM THEATER as the replacement for the recently departed Mike Portnoy.

Commented Mangini: "The day that I got the phone call to be in DREAM THEATER, it took my brain a minute to assemble what was going on, and when it sank in, the feeling was just of tremendous relief.

"It means so much to me, I almost felt like crying a couple of times. [Laughs] I didn't know what to do.

"What it means to me to be part of not only such a legendary band, but this band, is a sense of fulfillment and purpose. I feel like a puzzle piece, and with Mike [Portnoy] in particular, I feel really honored to carry on the torch for him; I'm carrying on his spirit." more

Daves 80's Something Rock ballad jam...Featuring my 2000 Gibson 1959 re-issue Les paul

Hey people! Time for one last clip in 2007! 08 is gonna be GREAT! Happy New Year to everyone! This backing track was called 80something from guitarbt dot com...it reminded me of a Whitesnake type ballad...i came up with everthing you hear me playing. the track was very inspirational. i wanted to record and get this up for x-mas but my work schedule, a painful callus while rehearsing it, and then a paper cut on my index finger stopped me...so, i says, ok, i'll do it before new years. then i catch a wicked cold...i recorded it feeling rather miserable and feel i could have done it better but i wanted it up be the end of 07...so, for better or worse, this is my last offering for 2007...Enjoy!Also, for those who wish to know...This is my setup... I play through a Digitech 2120 guitar processor...It's powered by a 50 watt Mesa Boogie stereo power amp... It all goes through 2 Marshall 4x12 cabinets in stereo... i also sometimes use a Steve Vai Bad Horsie Wah Wah pedal... Daves Melodic Rock original piece to a backing track-Light at the end of the tunnel

Daves Melodic Rock original piece to a backing track-Light at the end of the tunnel

Greetings! Dave here with one last clip for 2008! This is a little piece I made up after finding the backing track on the WWW...I call it The light at the end of the tunnel... It's been a crappy year for the most part...gas prices, the stock market, the economy in general, and a personal revelation that things can change at anytime...this track just sort of "spoke" to me to come up with something uplifting. I get a really good feeling playing it for some reason..its my light at the end of the tunnel so to speak...I hope you enjoy it!Also, for those who wish to know...This is my setup... Daves 1959 Les Paul reissue Composition to a backing track called Reflections

Dave here with an original piece for the backing track called Reflections. I played it with my Gibson 1959 re-issue Les Paul. I used a Steve Vai Bad Horsie Wah wah pedal, a Jim Dunlop Jazz 3 pick, my Digitech 2120 guitar processor, a Mesa Boogie 20 watt per channel stereo power amp through 2 Marshall 4x12's in stereo....This clip was ready to be recorded over a month ago but the high heat and humidity here made it torture to sit and play for more than a few minutes. Yngwie Malmsteen: Wall Of Marshalls LIMS 2008

Yngwie Malmsteen provided a quick demo / clinic. As ever Ynqwie is the archetypal show man... total domination of his beloved instrument, over the top playing, that singing Fender Stratocaster, a wall of Marshalls, then just throw the guitar away at the end. Apologies to the maestro for losing him halfway through solo, my eyes aren't so good in the dark... and the overall sound quality.

Daniele Gregolin: Euro Groove Department Milan Guitar Day 6 #1 1080p

Cool solo 2:21 DVD and CD: www.egdmusic.com BIO The trio meets in winter 2004 when dutch bass player Joeri Hommerson who had just finished taping some pieces with X3 (Denny Seiwell drummer past member of Paul Mc.Carthney's Wings and Chris Currel Guitarist past member of Michael Jackson band), decides to form an all european band (most of all Italian) signing Marco Maggiore on drums and Daniele Gregolin on guitar (session guitarist for many Italian pop stars and solo artist). They started working as a band on pieces already written in the past by Hommerson rearranging everything in new key tones giving birth to the Euro Groove Department! In March 2005 they recoreded Optical Illusion in four days, arranged eleven original Hommerson's pieces were recorded, plus a very flashing version of Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia". Euro Groove Department also collaborate live and studio with the great bass icon Michael Manring who leaves his marks on the moving ballad "Aliyah", dedicated to homonym R&B singer who died prematurely on a plane crash. Emanuele Cisi, well known Italian Jazz saxophonist appears in the track "Out for Lunch". Eurogroove Department has also played with Michael Manring Adam Nitti (Dave Weckl band) Bryan Beller (Steve Vai Band, Deathclock and solo artist) and with the italian guitar player William Stravato at "Villa Arconati's Noi bassisti in Villa Festival and "Groove Festival" 2005 and 2006. Alex Skolnick: fretpoint interview

3. Testament are obviously an iconic thrash metal group. What was it like being
part of the Bay Area thrash metal scene?

Alex Skolnick: It was interesting. It was a bunch of misfits from all the different areas. The other guys in my band came from a little further away. I came from Berklee, university town. Had academic parents. However some of the other guys came from about 40 mins away in the suburbs and we'd play with bands like Death Angel and other groups that came from all over the area.

Death Angel came from South San Fransisco and others from Sacramento so there was this really interesting mix of people that found themselves together in the same scene. From the very beginning I really wanted to do something different. I really liked the high standards of guitar playing by the guys I listened to. Most of the thrash guys at the time however were listening to Motorhead and Venom and stuff like that which was great but it had garage style guitar playing and I refused to do that. I saw no reason why I couldn't include the musicianship of somebody like Randy Rhoads in thrash metal.

Fretpoint: Sure, and I think that really shines through with testaments material.

Thank you, it was just really different. I don't think I reinvented guitar playing or anything. Most of the guys I knew were trying to form bands like The Scorpians, or IronMaiden. If it was bands from South California then there was a trend towards glam rock. Some of these bands had great guitar players but with thrash it wasn't about the guitar solos and I was determined to change that. more
